Dutchtown Middle School eighth-grader Cody Martinez is headed to Gallup, N.M., later this month to compete in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo.

Cody, who has been riding bulls for eight years, finished the season in second place in the state.

This is the third time Cody qualified for the national rodeo.

The dates of the rodeo, which features more than 1,000 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia, are June 23 to June 29.

He’ll ride in two rounds at nationals to hopefully qualify for the short go round on June 29.

Cody fractured his shoulder halfway through the season at the local rodeo held in March at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center. After sitting out for a few weeks, he came back on top.

Since he began competing, Cody has won about 15 buckles, money and riding gear.

In addition to competing for more than $75,000 in prizes, NJHFR contestants will also be vying for more than $100,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National Junior High Finals rodeo National Champion.
