In typical summer fashion, nothing happens for days and then there’s one day that has multiple events followed by nothing again. That was the case May 29, which started out with breakfast at Sullivan’s and wrapped up with dinner at the Hilton Capitol Center.
The Baton Rouge Epicurean Society is gearing up for its seventh annual “Fête Rouge — A Louisiana Celebration of Food & Wine.” Things kicked off with a media breakfast at Sullivan’s, hosted by BRES board member Leo Verde.
The two-day food and wine festival begins Aug. 22 at the Crowne Plaza with the Grace “Mama” Marino Lifetime Achievement Award Dinner honoring Vince Ferachi. The dinner features a seven-course dinner paired with a selection of fine wines complementing each course. Strutting their culinary talents for this event are chefs William Wells, Culinary Productions; Jeremy Langlois, Latil’s Landing at Houmas House Plantation; Samantha and Cody Carroll, Hot Tails Restaurant; David Dickensauge, Bin 77 Bistro & Wine; Peter and Gino Sclafani, Ruffino’s Restaurant; Kelley McCann, Galatoire’s Bistro; and Gary Schenk, Crowne Plaza.
The following night, back at the Crowne Plaza, is the Wine & Food Fête which has 40 area chefs competing for bragging rights in the Gold Medal and Best in Show competition. Attendees also get to sample more than 200 wines from around the globe as well as taste the entries in the chefs’ competition. There’s also a silent auction benefiting Girls on the Run and a chance to win an instant 200-plus bottle wine cellar.

My after-5 party hopping started at the home of Carolyn Collins, who rolled out the welcome mat to her home for a get-together for members of the A.P. Tureaud Sr. Black Alumni Chapter of the LSU Alumni Association. Honored at the event were past presidents Rachel Emanuel, Leo Hamilton, John Horton, Mary Scott and A.P. Tureaud Jr.
One of the main topics of discussion was the chapter’s two-day reunion event celebrating the Tureaud’s legacy Sept. 6-7. Honorary co-chairmen of the event are Cissy Marshall, wife of the late Thurgood Marshall; Mayor Kip Holden; and National Urban League President Marc Morial. The last stop of the evening was the Louisiana Legislative Women’s Caucus Foundation’s Women of Excellence Awards & Scholarships Gala at the Hilton Capitol Center. Welcoming the more than 250 guests who were on hand to recognize the “exemplary achievements and contributions of extraordinary Louisiana women who personify excellence in leadership, profession, academics, community service, character and integrity” were state Rep. Karen St. Germain, chairwoman of the LLWC, and emcee Diane Deaton.
Honorees included Sevetri Wilson, of New Orleans, CEO of Solid Ground Innovations, Women of Excellence Business; Haley Powers Hilton, of Alexandria, College Woman of Excellence and recipient of an LLWC Foundation $1,000 scholarship; Cecile Charleville Guin, director of the LSU Office of Social Service Research & Development, Women of Excellence Education & Research; Madeline Marie Wagnon, of Shreveport, High School Woman of Excellence and recipient of an LLWC Foundation $1,000 scholarship; Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Bernett Johnson, of New Orleans, Louisiana Hero of Excellence; and Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana, represented by President Lisa White and Vice President Sunny Senft.
Receiving $500 Educational Advancement Opportunity scholarships were Hannah Elizabeth Bunch, Denham Springs High School; Nicole Ann Dominique, Edward Douglas White Catholic High School, Thibodaux; Carly Paige Funderburk, Florien High School; Emily Beth Hartzog and Hannah Margaret Pittman, Franklinton High School; Jasmine Aliyah Shanaé Littles, Zachary High School; and Caroline Emily Pearson, Holy Savior Menard Central High School, Alexandria.
The Lincoln Theater Restoration Project kicked off its fundraising campaign with a soirée at the American Legion Post No. 505 May 24. The guest list not only included project board members and volunteers, but members of the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame board and representatives of the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge and Foundation for Historical Louisiana — all of which are working to help restore this historic landmark of the black community.
Some early opportunities to be involved in the project include the Restore the Lincoln Brick-a-Thon, where the community can purchase bricks in honor or memory of a loved one, and the “Name that Seat” campaign, allowing for the replacement of the damaged seats in the theater and a name plate stating in whose honor or memory the seat is representing.
The Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame also has its 2013 Torches of Life Award induction ceremony honoring longtime Southern University band director Isaac Greggs set for June 22 at 7 p.m. While the event benefits the Lincoln Theater, which will house the hall of fame, the Torches of Life takes place at the Family Life Center of Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church.
