Summer days sometimes can seem extra long, depending on the heat, having children at home all day or just disrupted schedules in general.
At least once a week, plan an “invent-a-recipe day.” It can be a fun way to stretch the food imagination and those endless days. Occasionally, plan the recipe around something that isn’t an especially popular food choice for some, like vegetables.
Go to the grocery store armed with ideas, but talk about the things you see, seasonal foods and new items. Look at old items through fresh eyes.
Make the rules simple and easy. Let the children choose the sauce, name the recipe and, with supervision, teach older children the art of using a knife. Teach them about measuring ingredients, using easy math concepts, through measuring spoons and cups. The recipe they create might be great, or maybe not. But the memories made will be priceless.
