Benjamin Franklin High School has appointed Donald Jackson as new assistant principal.
“Mr. Jackson has distinguished himself as a superb educator. As such, he has won the respect and admiration of students, teachers and parents,” said Benjamin Franklin High School Principal Dr. Timothy Rusnak.
Jackson has extensive experience in a range of schools in the New Orleans public school system. He has worked as a classroom teacher and was named a “Teacher of the Year” in 2000. He has held several principal positions, including his current as principal of James Johnson Elementary School.
Jackson has a certification from Xavier University as a Louisiana School Turnaround Specialist, and holds a M.E. in Educational Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Math from UNO.
He will start at Franklin July 1.
Edna Karr High School in New Orleans has been named a 2013 Gaston Caperton Inspiration Award school by the College Board for providing low-income students with the support they need to succeed academically. One of only three high schools nationwide to receive the award in 2013, Edna Karr will receive a $25,000 award to apply toward programs that encourage more students to attend college.
Young Audiences Charter School invites prospective students and families to attend an information session at 10 a.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. June 27. The sessions will be at the West Bank Regional Library, 2751 Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey.
The new open-enrollment, arts-integrated charter school will open its doors in August at Kate Middleton campus, 1407 Virgil St., Gretna.
The school is open to any Jefferson Parish student entering kindergarten through third grade. Students must reside in Jefferson Parish. Each year, the school will add one grade, with the goal of serving students in grades kindergarten through eight by fall 2018.

The CAC Summer Arts Camp features classes in visual arts, theater, dance, music, and culinary arts with a different set of local artists teaching each week.
Every day participants engage in these five art forms learning new techniques and expanding their imaginations.
Every Friday there is a showcase where students present their new creations to friends and family.
Camp runs July 8 through Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3p.m., Monday through Friday.
Sign up for one or more weeks. Ages 6 through 14 are welcome. Aftercare is available until 6 p.m. No previous arts experience is necessary.

Einstein Charter School Extension is looking for corporate partners and donors of artwork, plants, landscaping and campus improvements.
The school, formerly called Intercultural Charter School, is located at 5316 Michoud Blvd. in eastern New Orleans. Students are housed in a series of modular portable buildings.
CEO Shawn Toranto is working to provide some aesthetic improvements in the areas of landscaping throughout the new campus and add creative art work to line the fences that surround the school.

Students from Joseph S. Clark Preparatory High School were named the national first place winners in the Congress for the New Urbanisms “Highways to Boulevards” video contest, for their mini-documentary, “Splitting the Tremé.”
The students who produced the piece will receive $500 towards next year’s productions, and the video was screened at the CNU National Conference on June 1.
Tulane University’s New Orleans Center for the Gulf South, NOVAC and FirstLine Schools have partnered to create an innovative after school youth media production program at Clark Prep High School. Tulane students from the place-based Storytelling in New Orleans class, taught by local filmmaker Luisa Dantas, (Land of Opportunity),came to Clark Prep High School after the school day and worked with students conceiving, scripting, shooting and editing productions that reflect Clark students’ experiences of the place they call home. Together this year they created five short video pieces; two documentaries (including Splitting the Treme), a profile of Clark students, and two narrative shorts, a romance and a horror film.
