CLINTON, Miss. — The LSU-Eunice softball team secured its second national title in the past three seasons with an 8-0 victory against Phoenix (Ariz.) College on Saturday in the NJCAA Division II championship game.
The victory lifted LSUE to a final record of 62-5.
“It’s a great feeling to get back on top and to put together probably the greatest season ever in LSU-Eunice softball,” coach Andy Lee said.
The final five wins came in the national tournament as the Lady Bengals swept through the bracket and outscored their opponents 53-8.
In the title game, Ashley Subervielle broke open a scoreless game with a two-run homer to center field in the fourth inning before the Lady Bengals piled on six more runs in the sixth. A 1-2-3 top of the seventh sent the Lady Bengals into celebration mode as they dogpiled on the infield.
In the sixth, Kelsey Hollier’s RBI double pushed the lead to three before Emily Nolan followed with a towering home run to left. The final three insurance runs came when Codi Covington tripled down the right-field line with the bases loaded.
Subervielle, Covington and Brooke Clark each finished with two hits. Julienne Broussard went the distance, tossing a five-hit shutout.
