VACHERIE — A new garbage contract will save St. James Parish residents $1.45 each month.
The St. James Parish Council unanimously agreed in a 7-0 vote Wednesday to reduce fees for the parish’s residential solid waste collection program.
Councilmen Alvin St. Pierre, Terry McCreary, Jason Amato, Ralph Patin, Charles Ketchens, Ken Brass and James Brazan approved the proposed ordinance that will reduce fees from $6.75 to $5.30 per month.
The reduction is part of a new contract with Waste Management of Louisiana LLC, officials said.
Other business before the council included:
DETENTION CENTER: Parish Director of Emergency Preparedness Eric Deroche said Sheriff Mike Waguespack is still “actively working” to be able to open a new youth detention center in Napoleonville by the time the St. James Youth Detention Center closes June 30.
St. James Parish government officials have said they will close the present detention center, situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River adjacent to the Sunshine Bridge, on June 30 because of new state regulations that will drive up the cost of operating the facility.
Deroche said the next thing officials need to work on is a plan to transfer juvenile offenders now in custody to the new facility.
SALES TAX REBATE: Council members unanimously approved a resolution providing a rebate of 50 percent of the sales and use taxes paid by Mosaic Co. for purchase of materials used in construction of a $700 million expansion at its Faustina site.
Mosaic’s Faustina site makes anhydrous ammonia for use in fertilizers and its second site in Uncle Sam makes products used in phosphate-based fertilizer.
ENTERPRISE ZONE: The Parish Council unanimously approved two resolutions endorsing the participation of Noranda Alumina LLC and Wolverine Terminals LLC in the Louisiana Enterprise Zone/Quality Jobs Program.
Wolverine Terminals and state officials announced Wednesday plans for the company to invest $30 million in a crude oil terminal and blending operation on a 15-acre Mississippi River site in St. James Parish.
