LSU men’s basketball assistant coach Robert Kirby is apparently leaving to take a similar position at the University of Memphis, according to a report Tuesday by the Memphis (Tenn.) Commercial Appeal.
A native of Memphis, Kirby just completed his first season at LSU as part of the inaugural staff under coach Johnny Jones. Kirby’s role was bench coach and recruiter.
Jones could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday night.
The report in the Memphis newspaper said Kirby would fill one of two vacancies on the Tigers’ staff.
A 1983 graduate of Texas Pan American, Kirby’s 28-year coaching career has included a stop at Southeastern Louisiana (1988-89), two stints at Mississippi State and two seasons at Georgetown before joining Jones at LSU.
LSU went 19-12 last season, 9-9 in the Southeastern Conference.
