Gonzales man killed on visit to brother-in-law in Florida

A Gonzales man was shot and killed early Sunday in Florida by his brother-in-law, police said.

Thomas “Gerry” Rangeley, 56, of Gonzales, died at North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview, Fla., after being shot once in the chest by a rifle, according to a news release from the Okaloosa County, Fla., Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. Sunday in the small community of Dorcas, Fla., about 60 miles northeast of Pensacola, according to Michele Nicholson, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.

Rangeley’s brother-in-law, Burton Terry Todd, 51, is the person who pulled the trigger, sheriff’s investigators said.

Rangeley had been visiting Todd’s residence on County Road 393 in Dorcas, where a group of people had gathered at a mobile home. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the shooting, investigators said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been filed in the incident, and investigators were still trying to piece together a timeline of events that led to the shooting, Nicholson said.

“It’s still an open investigation,” Nicholson said. “At this point, I’ve released what the investigators are OK with making public while they continue the case.”
