NEW ORLEANS — VooDoo defensive back Demarcus Robinson gets frustrated when opposing offenses don’t throw his way.
That’s why Robinson admittedly gets a little chippy after the whistle.
“I’m hungry (for a tackle), and they’re not giving me anything to eat,” Robinson said as the VooDoo prepared to play at the Iowa Barnstormers at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
The VooDoo enter this Arena Football League matchup with hopes of an improved defensive effort, which will have to include Robinson, the team’s leading tackler (32).
Robinson is one of the few VooDoo veterans in the secondary who have eluded this season’s injury bug.
Both of the defense’s starting cornerbacks — Delvin Breaux and Eddie Moten — have missed significant time.
A number of injuries on defense, as well as offense, have forced the VooDoo (1-5) to learn how to play with new combinations of starters.
It’s taken some time for the players to figure out each other, but Robinson said he believes the process is complete and the VooDoo are ready to end their losing streak.
Not that Iowa Barnstormers J.J. Raterink will make it easy.
After all, Raterink is coming off a seven-touchdown effort last week during a 48-36 win against the San Antonio Talons.
With the win, the Barnstormers ended a four-game losing skid.
During Iowa’s 48-34 win at the VooDoo during Week 2, Raterink passed for 253 yards and four TDs, while rushing for another two.
For the season, Raterink has thrown for 1,923 yards and 36 TDs.
The VooDoo defense is allowing 55.8 points per game, ranked 12th out of 14 AFL teams.
The Iowa offense, meanwhile, ranks ninth in the league, averaging 48.9 points a game.
Robinson, though, said the VooDoo has spent this week concentrating in part on what they can do better. From moving more inside to taking two steps back instead of one, the VooDoo want to play a cleaner game, free of the mental errors that have become more glaring during the losing streak.
“I think we’ve got better as a defensive group,” Robinson said. “We’re all athletes out here. They can’t do different than us. Only difference is they’re not busting coverages. We need to get to that.”
