Baton Rouge Sen. Dan Claitor’s push to make the governing boards for the LSU and Southern University systems report which students receive scholarships from board members is nearing final legislative passage.
Senate Bill 31 won approval Wednesday from the House Education Committee and heads next to the full House for debate. It would require the boards to post the list of its scholarship recipients annually on their websites.
The list would have to include the name of each recipient, the board member who gave the scholarship and the annual dollar value of the award. Refusal to submit the information would suspend board members’ ability to give scholarships.
“It’s just a little sunshine bill,” said Claitor, R-Baton Rouge.
