Police identify 13-year-old I-10 crash victim

Lafayette police on Thursday identified the 13-year-old girl who died after an Interstate 10 traffic crash Wednesday morning as Abigail Vasquez, of Breaux Bridge, a student at Paul Breaux Middle School.

The crash occurred west of University Avenue at around 7:22 a.m. when an eastbound Ford pickup on I-10 crossed the median “for unknown reasons” and crashed into the westbound Pontiac in which Vasquez was one of two passengers, police said in a news release.

The three people in the Pontiac, including Vasquez, and the driver of the Ford were taken to area hospitals with what were initially believed to be moderate injuries, police said.

“Traffic investigators were later notified that a 13-year-old passenger from the Pontiac sedan died at an area hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the crash,” police spokesman Cpl. Kyle Soriez said Wednesday.

Soriez said police also learned that the driver of the pickup, who was not identified, was in serious condition.

Police also did not release the names of the driver of the Pontiac or the other passenger.

The accident, which caused traffic problems and forced police to detour motorists, remains under investigation, Soriez said.

On Wednesday evening, Lafayette Parish school Superintendent Pat Cooper said the school district would provide a “health and wellness team” to assist Paul Breaux Middle School students and faculty with grief issues.
