LSU’s Simpson selected to NCAA men’s tennis championships

INDIANAPOLIS — LSU men’s tennis player Chris Simpson has been selected to participate in the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill., the NCAA Men’s Tennis Subcommittee announced Wednesday.

The University of Illinois, Champaign will host the event.

Simpson, along with the 63 other players who were selected, will compete in the singles competition May 22-27 at the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-21.

This will be Simpson’s first appearance at the NCAA Singles Championships.

All matches will be the best of Simpson, ranked No. 48 in singles, was picked as an at-large selection. The automatic qualifier for the Southeastern Conference is No. 2 Mikelis Libietis of No. 6 Tennessee, the SEC Player of the Year.

Of the 45 at-large selections, 17 of them are from the SEC, including Simpson.

Simpson, an All-SEC second team member, is 11-12 in singles during the dual match season.

Simpson has defeated eight ranked opponents, including a dramatic three-set match-clincher over then-No. 3 Libietis of Tennessee.

Men’s basketball

RECRUITING CLASS RANKED NINTH BY ESPN: The LSU men’s basketball team’s 2013-14 recruiting class moved up one spot to ninth in the final ESPN rankings announced Wednesday.

LSU’s class is at No. 10 by Rivals.com and No. 9 by Scout.com.

LSU’s class includes five-star recruit Jarell Martin of Madison Prep and four-star athletes Jordan Mickey of Prime Prep Academy in Arlington, Texas and Tim Quarterman of Johnson High School in Savannah, Ga. Those three players signed in the fall and were joined in the spring by three-star local player Brian Bridgewater of Scotlandville High.

The Tigers also signed John Odo of Nigeria, who has been with the team practicing since the start of the spring semester, and spring signee Darcy Malone, a seven-footer from Australia.

In ESPN’s final player ratings, Martin is ranked 11th in the nation, Mickey is No. 38 and Quarterman is at No. 80. Martin is the nation’s No. 3 power forward in the rankings.

In the Rivals rankings, Martin is listed at No. 13, Mickey is at No. 41 and Quarterman is No. 71.
