Bill to exempt some disabled students from taking ACT clears Senate

Legislation to exempt students with disabilities from taking a college preparation test cleared the state Senate Wednesday.

Senate Bill 127 would require the students to opt into taking the ACT. Students’ nonparticipation would not factor into a school’s performance scores.

The bill’s sponsor, state Sen. Gary Smith, D-Norco, said students would not have to take the test unless their parents think they should take it.

The Senate voted 38-0 in favor of advancing the proposal to the Louisiana House.
