Bill would send BP settlement monies to coastal protection

The Louisiana House on Wednesday overwhelming endorsed a proposed constitutional amendment that direct Deepwater Horizon settlement be deposited in a special fund for coastal protection and preservation.

The House voted 98-0 for the measure aimed at stopping the raiding of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Fund where the dollars are supposed to go by a law passed last year.

House Bill 118 sponsored by state Rep. Simone Champagne, R-Jeanerette, would provide constitutional protection to the dedication.

The proposition now heads to the Louisiana Senate for debate. A two-thirds vote of the Louisiana House and state Senate are required before the proposed constitutional amendment can be submitted to voters for approval.

With no statewide elections this year, the proposition would not go to voters until 2014.
