Storm Chasers, Zephyrs suspended
Wednesday’s game was suspended after a 59-minute rain delay.
It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 25, starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday’s scheduled nine-inning game will be completed, followed by a seven-inning game.
Wednesday’s game was stopped when the rain came eight minutes after first pitch. Omaha had a 1-2-3 top of the first. The Zephyrs’ Gorkys Hernandez was at-bat in the bottom of the inning when play was stopped, and the game will resume with him batting with a 2-2 count.

The Kansas City Royals, the Storm Chasers’ parent club, drafted shortstop Christian Colon in the first round on 2010, fourth overall, from Cal State Fullerton, giving him a signing bonus near $3 million.
This is his fourth season in the minors. He batted .278 in rookie ball in 2010, then .257 in Class AA in 2011. Last year, he batted .289 in AA, then played five games in AAA and showed promise, hitting .412.
Starting with Omaha this season, he is batting just .227 (20-for-88). In Monday’s series-opener against the Zephyrs, he went 0-for-5. He was not in the lineup Tuesday.
In 2010 at Fullerton, he hit .358 with 17 homers and 13 stolen bases and was selected a first-team All-American by Baseball America.
“He put up big numbers, but that was with an aluminum bat,” said a scout who covers four PCL teams, including the Chasers and Zephyrs. “His best chance (to make the majors) will be as a utility infielder. He’s good defensively, but he’s not fast. But he knows how to handle the bat. He can hit-and-run and bunt real well.”
Right-hander Elih Villanueva (1-2, 3.47 ERA) is due to come off the seven-day disabled list Thursday.
When he went on the DL, Villanueva had just come off perhaps his best outing of the season, a 1-0 victory on April 23 at Round Rock in which he gave up just four hits, walked two and struck out eight in 6.2 innings. Three days later, he was on the DL with a right triceps strain.
Reliever Rett Varner has been assigned to the Zephyrs from AA Jacksonville. He was 1-1, with a 4.32 ERA in 8.1 innings over seven games.
Varner was called up to the Zephyrs last year, also, but pitched just two innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one.
Last season, he had a 2.61 ERA in 10.1 innings over six games with Jacksonville, after going 4-6 with a 3.87 ERA over 21 games with A Jupiter, Fla.
