HAMMOND — Manny Miles pitched three-hitter and also was 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, leading fourth-seeded University High to a 4-1 victory over Sterlington in Class 2A regional-round baseball playoff action.
Wet field conditions prompted the teams to move the game from Baton Rouge to Southeastern Louisiana University’s Alumni Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The change of venue didn’t hamper Miles (10-0). Gino Marucci was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI for the Cubs (27-6). Jake Wharton finished 1-for-3 and scored a run.
Sterlington (24-10) was led by Kyle Vandergracht, who finished 3-for-3 at the plate. Tyler Buffington had an RBI for SHS. Casey Sutton (12-2) took the loss.
CENTRAL PRIVATE 8, CENTREVILLE ACADEMY 2: In Centreville, Miss., Brennan Fucich tossed a two-hitter to help Central Private win the first game in a best-of-three games Mississippi Association of Independent Schools series.
Brad Miller was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Ryan Bowman finished 2-for-4 and also had two RBIs for the Rebels (26-4). Centreville is 18-6.
NORTH VERMILION 13, LIVONIA 3: In Lafayette, 10th-seeded North Vermilion used its bunting game to score seven runs in the fourth inning and added six more in the seventh en route a Class 3A regional win over No. 7 Livonia.
Winning pitcher Donald Comeaux and Trey Broussatd delivered RBI hits in the fourth. Comeaux also scattered six Livonia hits in six innings to pick up the win in the game played at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
NVHS (25-4) advances to play No. 2 E.D. White Catholic in the quarterfinals.
SAM HOUSTON 2, SLIDELL 0: In Moss Bluff, the host Broncos scored the only runs in the bottom of the second in Class 5A bidistrict action.
Collin Kober pitched a two-hitter, striking out five and walking only two for sixth-seeded Sam Houston. Andrew Bryan was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the winners. Cliff Reid finished 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Broncos. Kameron Esthay had a triple and run scored.
Blake Van Court and Steve Jung got the only hits for Slidell.
Captain Shreve, the No. 19 seed, and 14th-seeded Denham Springs High were unable to play their Class 5A bidistrict playoff game for the second straight day because of rain.
DSHS coach Mark Carroll said the game is rescheduled once again for 4 p.m. Thursday at North Park. Carroll also said the game will likely be moved to ULL’s M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field if the North Park Field is not playable.
Meanwhile, second-seeded Destrehan has also opted to move its bidistrict game after two days of delays. The Wildcats will play No. 31 Fontainebleau at 4 p.m. Thursday at SLU’s Alumni Field.
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s State Tennis Tournament was washed out by heavy rains Wednesday in the Monroe area.
Coaches for teams in Division I and Division II are scheduled to meet at 7 a.m. Thursday to determine whether the first day of the two-day event will be played one day late.
LHSAA Executive Director Kenny Henderson said if rain delays the start of the two-day tourney another day it will likely be pushed back to Saturday and Sunday at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
The Parkview Baptist team of Collin Anders and Michael Bayles posted a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 in the Division III boys doubles final played Tuesday at ULM.
The double victory helped the Eagles finish as the Division III runner-up.
A year ago, the PBS doubles duo finished second.
