‘Pop-up’ markets
planned for north BR

A grand opening celebration for the new Red Stick Mobile Farmers Market will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Star Hill Baptist Church, 1400 N. Foster Drive. It will feature a cooking demonstration with food sampling, complimentary recipe and nutrition cards, and tips for purchasing and storing fresh produce.

The Red Stick Mobile Farmers Market will then begin operating each Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Scotlandville Library and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Star Hill.

Copper Alvarez, executive director of Big River Economic & Agricultural Development Alliance, said the mobile “pop-up” market will provide a regular source of fresh, locally grown produce in the North Baton Rouge area designated as a food desert. She said the mobile market, a special project of BREADA under the Fresh Beginnings grant program, will have the ability to service several sites. It will increase to six to eight weekly location stops later in the year.

It will be sourced from the same farmers who attend the Red Stick Farmers Markets each week. It will accept several payment options, including SNAP/EBT, WIC, and credit and debit cards, Alvarez said.

Bayou Boogaloo fest set May 17-19 in N.O.

The MotherShip Foundation will host the eighth annual Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo Festival on May 17-19 on the banks of Bayou St. John at Orleans Avenue and North Jefferson Davis Parkway.

The family-friendly, admission-free event will feature 25 food vendors; spirits; local music; a children’s stage; games and activities for kids; the Boogaloo Art Market; and the fourth annual Rubber Duck Derby on May 19 to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.

In addition, Slow Food Nola and Slow Food International, which are holding their annual conference the same weekend, will have a tent at the Boogaloo festival where they will offer cooking demonstrations and storytelling about local food and Southern culture.

The festival will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 17, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 18 and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 19.

A portion of the 2013 festival’s proceeds will be used to replace live oak trees lost during hurricanes Katrina and Isaac on the festival grounds.

Arnaud’s Restaurant sets speakeasy dinner

Arnaud’s Restaurant, at 813 Bienville St., will host a four-course Speakeasy Dinner at 7 p.m. May 16.

Legend has it that during the Prohibition Era, Arnaud’s and its patrons dodged enforcement on the ban of alcohol.

“Prohibition was fast on the heels of Arnaud’s opening in 1918,” said Katy Casbarian, co-owner of Arnaud’s. “So, our founder, Arnaud Cazenave, would serve bootleg liquor in coffee cups. It didn’t go unnoticed. In fact, he was arrested three times for doing so, but never spent a night in jail.”

The dinner has become a tradition for guests who are encouraged to dress in 1920s attire and gain entry to the dinner only after learning the “secret knock.” Once granted access, guests will nosh on a menu featuring four courses of Creole cuisine, consistent with the food from the era, paired with a variety of French wines.

The dinner will include hors d’oeuvres of frog legs, steak tartar and Arnaud’s signature soufflĂ© potatoes; crawfish and mirliton salad; poached trout fillet topped with shrimp, crabmeat and mushrooms with sauce Marguery; filet mignon topped with foie gras mousse and sauce Perigueux; and classic Napoleon.

Lunchtime Challenge deadline set Sunday

Children, ages 8 to 12, have only until Sunday to submit a personal recipe in the nationwide Healthy Lunchtime Challenge for a chance of winning a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a Kids’ “State Dinner” at the White House this summer.

Children and their parents or guardians are asked to submit an original lunch recipe that is healthy, affordable and tasty.
