NEW ORLEANS — Not much has gone the way Tulane has hoped this season.
The Green Wave has struggled on the field and off, hovering around the .500 mark while battling inconsistency on the field and injuries that have kept key players off it.
The team also has had mixed success against its in-state rivals, suffering some tough, stinging losses.
But the Greenies have a chance to make a statement this week, with back-to-back midweek home games against Southeastern Louisiana and UNO.
Tulane will host Southeastern at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. UNO will face the Green Wave at Turchin Stadium at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Tulane enters the game tied for sixth in Conference USA with Houston (those teams will square off this weekend in New Orleans), coming off a doubleheader sweep of Marshall on Saturday that pulled the team to a 22-22 overall record.
The Green Wave dropped the first game of the three-game series 4-3 in 11 innings, then came back to win Saturday’s games 3-2 (also in 11 innings) and 7-3. The back-to-back wins capped a four-game road trip for the team, which began with a tough 4-3 loss to LSU on Wednesday.
The Lions are 28-17 and one game out of first place in the Southland Conference. They won two of three games against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi over the weekend, splitting a Saturday doubleheader.
UNO is 7-39, but one of those wins was a 5-4 victory over Tulane on March 19 at Turchin Stadium. Tulane later avenged that loss April 17 to win the First NBC Cup, which goes to the annual series champion.
On Tuesday, Tulane is expected to start sophomore right-hander Randy LeBlanc, who will make his fourth consecutive midweek appearance. Last week against LSU, he gave up four hits in 5.1 innings. He has posted victories against Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe.
Southeastern will start left-hander Kyle Cedotal, who also started when these teams met March 12 in Hammond. Cedotal gave up five hits in three innings.
Senior Andrew Reeves will start Wednesday’s game against UNO.
The Privateers will start sophomore Alex Smith, who comes in with a team-leading 4.14 ERA.
