Once again the injury bug has ruined another main event for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) sending president Dana White scrambling to find a last minute replacement to keep the April 6 fight card alive. What could have been an exciting main event with a No. 1 contender bout has resulted in a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a local man to become a national hero in his home country of Sweden.
Ticketholders are left scratching their heads in Stockholm, Sweden as their local light heavyweight No. 1 contender Alexander Gustafsson was sidelined after suffering a cut on his head in training this past week. Now Gegard Mousasi, his opponent, is set to make his UFC debut against a nearly unknown fighter, who had only three days to prepare for the bout.
Enjoy the entire main card for free on network cable television while the undercard will be aired live and free as well. Check below for viewing details.
Main Card: Live on Fuel TV
Gegard Mousasi vs. Ilir “The Sledgehammer” Latifi
Gegard Mousasi – Tehran, Iran, 6-1, 205 pounds, 33-3-2
Ilir Latifi – Malmo, Sweden, 5-8, 205 pounds, 8-2-0
Gegard Mousasi, one of the most underrated mixed martial artists in the world, finds himself in a lose-lose situation. If Mousasi wins, it will be against one of the biggest underdogs he’s ever faced--if not the biggest underdog in UFC history. Lose and this fight could set Mousasi back years all the while becoming a laughing stock in the UFC.
Latifi has a fighter’s chance as most good wrestlers do, but he will be making his UFC debut on three days notice. In other words, it’s the ultimate David vs. Goliath matchup.
Mousasi by anyway he wants
Ross “The Real Deal” Pearson vs. Ryan Couture
Ross Pearson – Sunderland, England, 5-8, 155 pounds, 16-6-0
Ryan Couture – Seattle, 5-10, 155 pounds, 6-1-0
The legacy continues when Ryan Couture, son of former UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, faces off against “Ultimate Fighter 9” winner Ross Pearson in the co-main event. Couture has some huge shoes to fill in his UFC debut, but as the old saying goes, one fight at a time. Couture is quite different than his father, fighting in the lightweight division and with more of a submission style ground game. This should be a good opponent for his first UFC fight to see exactly where he will stand in the UFC rankings.
Pearson, an Ultimate Fighter winner, is the most under-appreciated fighter in the UFC. Pearson is now a solid journeyman in the UFC division and not to be overlooked. Higher caliber opponents of his in the past have done this and have paid.
This should be a great fight to lead up to the main event.
Pearson by Unanimous Decision
Matt Mitrione vs. Phil De Fries
Matt Mitrione –Springfield, Ill., 6-3, 205 pounds, 5-2-0
Phil De Fries – Sunderland, 6-5, 250 pounds, 9-2-0
Loser goes home, winner stays. The UFC has made no bones about it that they are way overstaffed and have been cutting fighters left and right. Matt Mitrione and Phil De Fries are both coming off loses in their last fight and with one more they are done.
Mitrione started his UFC career undefeated through five fights but now has lost his last two. I look for him to get back on the winning track with a dominant win over De Fries.
Mitrione by TKO (Strikes)
Brad “One Punch” Pickett vs. Mike “The Hulk” Easton
Brad Pickett – East London, England, 5-6, 135 pounds, 23-7-0
Mike Easton – Washington, D.C., 5-6, 135 pounds, 13-2-0
Easton by Unanimous Decision
Diego “Ceara” Brandao vs. Pablo “The Scarecrow” Garza
Diego Brandao – Ceara, Brazil, 5-7, 145 pounds, 20-8-0
Pablo Garza – Wasco, Calif., 6-1, 145 pounds, 13-3-0
Brandao by Unanimous Decision
Akira Corassani vs. Robbie “Problems” Peralta
Akira Corassani – Lund, Sweden, 5-8, 145 pounds, 12-4-1
Robbie Peralta – San Diego, 5-8, 145 pounds, 16-3-0
Peralta by TKO (Strikes)
