State Police: Driver may have been impaired in Lafayette Parish fatality

Driver impairment may be a factor in the fatal head-on fatal collision Saturday on La. 724, south of Landry Road in Lafayette Parish, a State Police spokesman said.

Jamie Benoit, 43, of Duson, may have been impaired when he was driving his 1994 GMC pickup truck north of La. 724 at about 10:45 a.m., crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2003 Mazda car driven by Emile Peltier, 17, of Duson, Trooper 1st Class Stephen Hammons said in a news release.

Benoit, Peltier and all three passengers wore seat belts, Hammons said. Benoit died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced dead by the Lafayette Parish coroner, Hammons said.

Peltier and her passengers sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a hospital, Hammons said.

Troopers submitted toxicology samples from Benoit to the State Crime Lab for testing, Hammons said.
