When the Louisiana High School Athletic Association released its Class 5A baseball pairings Saturday no team from the Baton Rouge area garnered higher than a No. 10 seed.
Jesse Cassard, coach of 10th-seeded Zachary High, offered a reminder to his team and the other local teams: it doesn’t matter where you start the playoffs, it’s where you end up.
“At one point in the middle of district we were as high as No. 4 in the power rankings,” Cassard said. “We had a couple of losses in district that dropped us down. But now that doesn’t matter.
“The goal now is to win and advance. We all have the same goal, and that’s to get to the (5A) state tournament in New Orleans. I think our best baseball will be ahead of us if we stay focused.
“I think that goes for the other Baton Rouge teams, too. We’ve got a tradition of winning and putting teams there (in New Orleans). I think it can continue.”
The 10th-seeded Broncos (23-11) host No. 23 Airline (19-15) in bidistrict action set for at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Zachary Youth Park.
Denham Springs (No. 14) and Dutchtown (No. 15) also will host bidistrict games. DSHS (21-8) hosts No. 19 Captain Shreve (23-11), while DHS (25-9) hosts District 5-5A and Ascension Parish rival St. Amant (24-9).
Two of the remaining three teams will travel to Lafayette. Catholic High (21-13), seeded 21st, travels to No. 12 Lafayette High, while No. 22 Walker (18-13) goes to 11th-seeded Comeaux (23-10). East Ascension (15-19), the 30th seed, goes to New Orleans to take on No. 3 Brother Martin.
