Our family recently returned to Louisiana after my husband retired from 20-plus years in the U.S. Army. We were blessed to live in several states and two foreign countries. The years away and the travel only reinforced our opinion that Louisiana is a blessed state: good people, great climate, abundance of wildlife, amazing food, complex history, lush and productive countryside, unique culture etc.
The one thing I don’t understand is why people take all this for granted and trash the place. Louisiana is the messiest place we have lived. It is one of the first things friends notice when they visit. It seems to be a mindset.
Last week I was driving La. 16 though Livingston Parish. Construction workers were placing temporary reflectors in the center of the road. As they pulled the paper backing off the adhesive they threw the paper to the ground. The papers were fluttering around the road like fall leaves.
Are there not littering fines in Louisiana? Maybe some sociology grad student needs to make this his/her research. Why do so many Louisiana residents care so little for their state?
