Authorities continued to search Thursday for a man wanted for his alleged role in an armed robbery and kidnapping Monday that left a man in the hospital.
Zebbie Berthelot, 37, and Clynt Williams, 38, are accused of assaulting a man in an abandoned building on Old Hammond Highway and stealing more than $6,800, then forcing the man to consume pills and have sex with prostitutes, according to an affidavit warrant for Williams.
Berthelot and Williams beat up the victim after Williams struck his head with a .45-caliber Glock handgun, the warrant says.
East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said the attack occurred during a possible drug deal.
The suspects forced the victim into a white pickup and drove him to the Fountain Motel at 9201 Airline Highway, where Williams’ girlfriend, referred to in the warrant as “Kaitlyn,” rented a room, the warrant says.
Williams, 1000 Spur Road, Denham Springs, was arrested Wednesday and booked into Parish Prison on one count each of armed robbery, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated battery, the warrant says.
Berthelot is out on bond while awaiting arraignment on felony drug charges stemming from an arrest on possession of methamphetamine on Dec. 31 in the parking lot of the Waffle House on 2320 Sherwood Forest Blvd.
His arraignment was scheduled for April 11, but he told state District Judge Richard Anderson he needed more time to hire a lawyer and the judge reset the arraignment for May 20.
In 1992, Berthelot pleaded guilty to manslaughter for his role in the 1992 carjacking and slaying of LSU freshman Kipp Earl Gullett.
Berthelot was sentenced to 20 years, but was paroled in 2002.
His arrest in December was three months after his parole supervision in the Gullett case was terminated, officials have said.
If Berthelot is convicted of the robbery and kidnapping, East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III said, his office will “strongly consider” pursuing a habitual offender status against Berthelot, because of his history, during sentencing.
Berthelot, whose listed address is 17960 Will Ave., Lot 12, Greenwell Springs, is wanted on counts of burglary of an inhabited dwelling, theft, armed robbery, simple battery and aggravated kidnapping, according to information on the East Baton Rouge Parish clerk of court’s website.
