Louisiana and federal drug investigators arrested a former football player for the University of Missouri and the Arena Football League’s New Orleans VooDoo after finding him in possession of $50,000 worth of hydroponic marijuana, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office disclosed Thursday.

Brian K. Coulter, 27, 802 Circle Drive, Baker, was booked Wednesday into the Ascension Parish Jail in Donaldsonville with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and illegal carrying of a weapon, deputies said in a news release.

Coulter remained in custody awaiting bond, deputies said.

Narcotics agents with the Ascension Sheriff’s Office, Baton Rouge Police Department and federal Drug Enforcement Administration arrested Coulter in the parking lot of a Gonzales business, deputies said.

Agents seized eight pounds of marijuana and a 9 mm pistol from Coulter, deputies said. But deputies refused Thursday to identify the location of the arrest.

According to the VooDoo website, Coulter, a defensive end who had lettered at the University of Missouri in 2008 and 2009, was assigned to the New Orleans team in January 2012.

He spent most of the season on injured reserve, however, and, because his injuries prevented him from developing, his contract was not renewed in 2013, VooDoo officials said in a statement Thursday.

“Our hope is that Brian can get through this ordeal and get back to playing professional football somewhere. We wish him the best,” VooDoo head coach Pat O’Hara said in the statement.

Baker Police Chief Mike Knaps, who said he has known Coulter since Coulter’s teenage years, said Coulter has been recovering from a knee injury. Knaps said he was surprised to hear of Coulter’s arrest.

“It just shocks me to tell you the truth. He is a fine kid. I’d never guessed it,” Knaps said.

Earlier in his collegiate career, Coulter played football for Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Miss., the VooDoo website says.
