Idol contest to benefit  The Ascension Fund

Twenty high school and middle school singers will take the stage May 9 for the annual Ascension Idol competition.

The singing competition is a fundraiser for The Ascension Fund, said Jennifer deFrances, executive director of the nonprofit organization.

The contest starts at 7 p.m. at the Gonzales Civic Center.

Students competed in earlier rounds for a chance to compete in the contest, which is based on the popular American Idol television competition.

The first-place winner will receive a MacBook Pro, second place wins an iPad and the third-place winner gets an iPad Mini.

Fans may vote online for their favorite singer for a $1 fee. Go to http://www.ascension
