Martinez presented the proclamation to longtime community leader Robert Jackson in a brief ceremony in his office. Family members, friends and emergency response officials were present during the reading of the proclamation. Jackson, father of Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson, served as president of the Geismar Volunteer Fire Department from 1971 until 2012. Jackson has also served as a board member of the Ascension-St. James Airport and Transportation Authority Board of Commissioners for 26 years and as a member of the Jambalaya Festival Association for more than 25 years.
