Although the governor has abandoned the second half of his tax reform proposal (if it ever really existed), the momentum continues to grow for elimination of state income taxes incrementally over time.
We absolutely must not allow this to happen!
Our state got into its current fiscal mess this very way — doing things that create future budget holes, on the assumption we can and will take care of them later.
Our failure to do so has resulted in midyear budget cuts each of the last five years and a proposed fiscal year 2014 spending plan based on more speculative resources than ever.
If we need to reform our tax system, let’s first enact a budget that is supported by clearly recurring revenue. Please.
