What’s on the May 4 ballot in Baton Rouge and the suburban areas

Early voting begins Saturday and ends April 27 for the May 4 election, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day except Sunday. The following races and propositions are on the ballot in these parishes in the Baton Rouge area, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office.

D = Democrat

R = Republican

L = Libertarian

O = Other party

ASCENSION PARISH

Fire Protection District No. 1 proposition

To levy a 10-year, 15-mill property tax, generating an estimated $3.5 million a year, and to levy a $100 parcel fee for commercial properties and a $32 parcel fee for residential properties that will generate $449,000 a year to operate the fire protection district.

Parishwide school district proposition No. 1

To renew a 10-year, 21-mill property tax, generating an estimated $20 million a year, for salaries and benefits.

Parishwide school district proposition No. 2

To renew a 10-year, 8-mill property tax, generating an estimated $7.6 million a year, to give additional support to schools, with no fewer than 3-mills to be used for upgrading and maintaining technology programs.

Parishwide school district proposition No. 3

To renew a 10-year, 4-mill property tax, generating an estimated $3.8 million a year, for buildings and facilities.

Parishwide Ascension Council on Aging proposition

To renew a 10-year, 1.5-mill property tax, generating an estimated $1.3 million a year, to provide services for the elderly.

EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH

Concord Estates Crime Prevention District proposition

To levy a four-year, $69.50 parcel fee, generating an estimated $20,500 a year, to aid in crime prevention.

ST. HELENA PARISH

Parishwide proposition No. 1

To renew a 5-mill public health property tax, generating an estimated $227,500 a year, and rededicate the money to improve and repair public roads.

Parishwide proposition No. 2

To rededicate proceeds of a garbage collection half-cent sales tax, generating an estimated $700,000 a year, for public road improvements.

Parishwide Hospital Service District No. 1 proposition No. 1

To renew a 10-year, 5-mill property tax, generating an estimated $212,000 a year, to maintain and support St. Helena Parish Hospital.

Parishwide Hospital Service District No. 1 proposition No. 2

To renew a 10-year, 10-mill property tax, generating an estimated $425,000 a year, for hospital care and to operate the nursing home.

TANGIPAHOA PARISH

Consolidated School District No. 1 proposition

To levy a 5-year, 15-mill property tax, generating an estimated $3.42 million a year, to operate, maintain and equip accelerated classes, performing and visual arts programs, Montessori education, communication magnet programs and other magnet and enhancement programs.

Parishwide proposition

To rededicate proceeds of a 1 percent sales tax, generating an estimated $17 million a year, to the school system to buy land and improve schools.
