St. Aug. student winsengineering medals
St. Augustine High School junior David Bartholomew won three medals at the Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair recently for his project on parallel vs. series circuits.
“My project really caught their attention because I built a two-story house that was 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide with built-in lights,” Bartholomew said.
Bartholomew was awarded a first-place medal by M.S. Benbow & Associates for outstanding Senior Division investigative projects in the field of electrical engineering and another first-place medal by the New Orleans Federal Executive Board for the outstanding exhibit of energy conservation and/or energy resource development.
Bartholomew came in second place overall in the senior division of the fair, which had 13 schools participating.
Math contest heldat Community Day
Twelve teams took part in Community Day School’s annual math contest, sponsored by the Keller Family Foundation, Bruce J. Heim Foundation and Regions Bank.
In the individual competition, Bharat Solanky, of St. Martin’s Episcopal School, won first place. Second place went to Joyce Zhao, of Lusher Charter School; David Zhang, of Lusher Charter School, placed third.
In the team competition: Lusher Charter School placed first with team members Isaac Gasior, Eli Issokson and Gus Wietfeldt.
John Dibert Community School came in second with team members Mashi Harris, Alecia Augustine and Athan Nelson
And Lusher Charter School’s second math team also placed third with team members David Zhang, Joyce Zhao and Jennifer Webb.
Audition applications accepted by theater
Crescent City Lights Youth Theater is accepting applications for auditions for a production of “A Pocket Full of Rhymes” for students in grades four through 12 and “Children’s Letters to God” for students in grades four through 10.
Applications must be received by mail or by hand no later than 6 p.m. May 6 at Crescent City Lights Youth Theater, 305 Baronne St., Suite 302, New Orleans, LA 70112.
The applications can be downloaded from http://www.crescentcitylights.org. Accepted applicants will be contacted to schedule an audition.
There is a $10 per play application fee and a tuition fee of $325.
A limited number of need-based scholarships are available.
Auditions will start May 7. For more information call (504) 598-3800. Performances will be held at the NORD Ty Tracy Theater, first floor, Gallier Hall, 545 St. Charles Ave.
High school graduates with theater experience may call about volunteer internships.
Orleans board lauds students of the year
The Orleans Parish School Board recently presented certificates to the 2013 Students of the Year and the district runners-up to recognize a job well done.
Student of the year was 12th-grader William McGrew of Benjamin Franklin High School. Twelfth-grade runners-up were Ariane Schaffer, Lusher High School; Quynh Tram Tran, McMain; Brianna Despenza, Karr; Tierra Burton, McDonogh 35; and Genesis Ricard, Warren Easton.
The eighth-grade district winner was Karriem Bennett of McDonogh 35.
The fifth-grade district winners were Benjamin Wilkins of Lusher Elementary and Bria Joseph of Benjamin Franklin Elementary School.
Junior Achievement event helps students
Two hundred eighty-one students at Moton Elementary School and 472 at Hynes Charter, both in New Orleans, spent the day recently participating in specially designed Junior Achievement activities that will help children progress as future members of the workforce.
The Society of Louisiana CPAs, the Louisiana Banker’s Education Council and Junior Achievement Greater New Orleans partnered for the Annual Financial Literacy Days. Volunteers from the community shared their time and knowledge about work readiness, entrepreneurship and money management.
Proclamations have been issued by the New Orleans City Council in honor of Financial Literacy Day at each school to encourage all citizens to do their part to help young children understand the value of earning, saving, sharing, and good citizenship.
