NEW IBERIA — The Iberia Parish School Board held a slightly more optimistic view of its fiscal status than it did in February after reviewing revenue figures for March on Wednesday.
The School Board was presented with a side-by-side comparison of the months of March 2012 and March 2013. Board sales tax collections of $2,231,455 for March 2013 are down 7.68 percent from the $2,417,065 collected in March 2012. March 2012 sales tax collections, however, showed a 30 percent increase in collections compared with the $1,849,325 in March 2011.
“The economy was a little more robust at that time,” Superintendent Dale Henderson said of March 2012 sales tax collections.
“From 2011 to here, we’re in pretty good shape,” Henderson said in an interview following the meeting.
The sales tax collection totals are made up from several different income sources, including the 1/2-cent sales tax salary supplements and 3/4-cent sales tax salary supplements.
In other business Wednesday, Henderson announced that three Iberia Parish schools soon will be under new leadership after their principals retire.
Effective July 23, Kim Messman will replace T.J. Saunier at Delcambre High School, Gleacia Morales will replace Mike Bonin at Iberia Middle School, and Jody Romero will replace Danelle Renard at Delcambre Elementary.
Henderson also announced that there are fewer than 30 school days left in the year. Graduations start the week of May 13, and board meetings will be adjusted accordingly. The board will hold its regular meetings on the first and fourth Wednesdays of May.
