NEW ORLEANS — A 51-year-old man died from a gunshot wound to the face in Hollygrove on Tuesday.
Oliver Wicker was found near the intersection of Gen. Ogden and Olive streets at about 8:50 p.m., said John Gagliano, the Orleans Parish coroner’s chief investigator.
Officers were responding to a report of shots fired when they found Wicker lying on a sidewalk. Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene.
NEW ORLEANS — A 22-year-old man said he was shot by a bicyclist while waiting at a red light on Monday evening.
The victim said he was stopped at North Miro Street and St. Bernard Avenue at around 7:15 p.m. At that point, police said, an unidentified man on a bicycle rode up to the victim’s car and opened fire on him. The victim was hit in the arm, and drove himself to a local hospital.
MANDEVILLE — Mandeville police shot an abandoned briefcase found at a post office after Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing left law enforcement officials on high alert.
Police shot the briefcase with a shotgun after it was discovered in a garbage can outside of a post office at 1 Saint Ann Drive on Monday morning, according to Lt. Gerald Sticker, a police spokesman.
Before blasting the suitcase, police tried to take X-rays of the container and evacuated several buildings in the area, Sticker said.
Police later learned that a local man threw away the bag and only realized the uproar his disposal caused when he saw the bag being destroyed on television.
NEW ORLEANS — Police are investigating three robberies in Tremé and the French Quarter, including an incident in which a woman was choked and robbed near Bourbon Street and Esplanade Avenue.
In the Bourbon Street incident, the victim told police that a man came up to her and grabbed her neck at about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday. The victim also reported that she thought she felt a gun during the encounter. When the robber demanded the woman’s purse, she complied and the robber fled.
At around 2 p.m. Tuesday, a man and woman reported being robbed at gunpoint at Esplanade Avenue and North Villere Street.
Shortly after midnight, police also investigated a robbery in the 700 block of Burgundy Street. In that incident, two men said they were walking in the area when an armed man approached them and demanded money.
