Construction to begin on Morris Jeff school

Construction on Morris Jeff Community School’s new facilities will begin June 1, Principal Patricia Perkins announced Wednesday in a news release.

The new state-of-the- art $19 million school will be in Mid-City at 211 S. Lopez St., formerly the site of Fisk Howard Elementary School.

Fisk Howard was flooded during Hurricane Katrina and was demolished in 2010.

“We have been waiting for this good news since we first learned of the plan for a new building in 2009,” Perkins says. “We are so thrilled and excited. We will be eagerly watching progress on our new home.”

Morris Jeff is currently located at 2239 Poydras St., and in the fall will move to the Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church on Esplanade Avenue until construction on the new building is complete. Perkins said they have outgrown their current space.

The school serves 335 pre-K through fourth-grade students and will add 75 students each year until reaching a capacity of 735 students up to the eighth grade in 2018.

The new facilities will feature art rooms with a kiln, music rooms that open into a small auditorium, a gymnasium and up-to-date technology in every classroom.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in fall 2014.
