Members from the Gen. Robert McCausland Chapter attended the United States Daughters of 1812 83rd State Council on March 9 at Benedict’s Plantation in Mandeville.
Chapter President Zora Olsson reported on the chapter activities over the past year. She told of the chapter project to mark the graves of past chapter presidents. Plans were discussed for the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans that will be held in 2015. State Chaplain Lea Martin led a memorial service for members who died in the past year.
Daughters of 1812 membership is open to women age 18 and older who can offer satisfactory proof that they are lineal descendants of an ancestor who, during the period of 1784-1815, rendered civil, military or naval service to the country, rendered material aid to the U.S. Army or Navy, or who participated in the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Sundowners African Violet Society held its 33rd annual Flower Show March 23-24 at the Baton Rouge Garden Center. More than 150 show plants and four design classes were exhibited.
Show awards went to Martha Dyson, Best African Violet Trailer; Laura Moser, Best Semi-miniature and Best Miniature; Belinda Thibodeaux, Second Best in Show, Best in Show and Sweepstakes with most blue ribbon plants; and Sally Barlow, Best Design.
The club will host a national Dixie African Violet Show in Spring 2014. Growers from 13 Southern states will exhibit horticulture and designs. Several national African violet vendors will also have exhibits.
