First-round softball playoff games and pivotal district baseball games help highlight Tuesday’s high school sports schedule in the Baton Rouge area.
Top-seeded Brusly (28-2) hosts Avoyelles at 5 p.m. in Class 3A action, while No. 2-seeded St. Amant (24-2) hosts Lafayette High also at 5 p.m. to lead a large list of Class 5A teams competing on Tuesday.
In District 9-1A baseball, St. John (23-5, 8-1) hosts Ascension Catholic (14-12, 7-2) at 5 p.m. in Plaquemine for a game that will decide the league title. Catholic High (19-10, 7-2) hosts Dutchtown (21-8, 10-0) in 5-5A action at 6 p.m.
“It’s anybody’s title to win in 5A, and in some of the other classes, too,” St. Amant softball coach Scott Nielson said. “You have to win two games to get to the state tournament, and the last two years, Denham Springs has upset West Monroe in the second round to advance. We could face them (DSHS) in the second round.”
The Gators lead a contingent of six 5A teams set to host first-round or bidistrict games on Tuesday. Live Oak (No. 4), Dutchtown (No. 6), Walker (No. 7), East Ascension (No. 8) and Denham Springs (No. 15) also host games Tuesday.
In baseball, the ACHS-St. John game will feature a duel of top pitchers. Hunter Medine (7-2) and Hunter Schnebelen (7-1) will square off in the 9-1A showdown.
“I expect both pitchers to perform well,” St. John coach Heath Whittington said. “It’ll come down to who makes the fewest mistakes and who can take advantage of any hits they get. It will be a playoff atmosphere.”
Meanwhile, Dutchtown can move a step closer to wrapping up the 5-5A title and can notch its 11th straight win. The Griffins beat the Bears 9-6 in nine innings on Saturday. Cole Stapler (5-1) gets the start for DHS. Ben Braymer (2-4) will start for Catholic.
“Since district has started the guys have really turned it up a notch,” Dutchtown coach Chris Schexnaydre said. “Any time we play Catholic it’s always a good, competitive game. No one expects this one to be any different.”
