Apple Pie Without Apples
Makes 1 pie. Recipes provided by Gayle B. Smith is from “Confederate Receipt Book, a Compilation of Over One Hundred Receipts, Adapted to the Times,” introduction by E. Merton Coulter. Smith describes the recipe as “interesting.”
“To one small bowl of (white unsalted) crackers, that have been soaked until no hard parts remain, add one teaspoonful of tartaric acid (cream of tartar), sweeten to your taste, add some butter, and a very little nutmeg.”
Note: Smith said either milk or water can be used for soaking the crackers. She used 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons sugar.
