Around Jefferson: Free concerts kick off in Lafreniere Park

A series of spring concerts begins tonight at Lafreniere Park, 3000 Downs Blvd., Metairie.

The concerts will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Kicking things off this evening will be The Wise Guys. Other scheduled performers include 90 Degrees West on April 25; Flow Tribe on May 9; The Yat Pack on May 16; Mojeaux on May 23; and The Bucktown All-Stars on May 30.

Math contest planned

The Community Day School, 3747 West Esplanade Ave., Metairie, will sponsor its fifth annual math contact at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The event, open to students attending schools throughout the area, will include both individual and team competitions. Registration is free, and dinner will be provided.

Rabies vaccination day

The Jefferson Parish Rabies Vaccination Day is from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at 10 locations across Jefferson Parish.

Dog and cat owners may have their animals vaccinated against rabies and receive a parish pet license and collar tag for $15 per pet. No appointment is necessary.

The locations are:

West Bank: Avondale Playground Shelter, 709 S. Jamie Blvd., Avondale; Belle Terre Playground Shelter, 5600 Belle Terre Road, Marrero; Harvey Playground Pavilion, 2240 Alamo St., Harvey; Mel Ott Park Pavilion, 2301 Belle Chasse Highway, Gretna; and the Alario Center, 2000 Segnette Blvd., Westwego.

East bank: Lafreniere Park, 3000 Downs Blvd., Metairie; Cleary Playground, 3700 Civic St., Metairie; Lakeshore Playground, 1125 Rosa Ave., Metairie; Jefferson Playground, 4100 South Drive, Old Jefferson; and Muss Bertolino Playground, 630 West Esplanade Ave., Kenner.

Rabies Vaccination Day is a joint effort of the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, the Jefferson SPCA, and the Southeast Louisiana Veterinary Association.

Last year, more than 2,000 rabies vaccinations were administered which also provided pet owners the opportunity to schedule more than 200 spay/neuter appointments through the Jefferson Parish spay/neuter program.

More crawfish events

There are three more chances to enjoy crawfish this weekend. And each event takes place in Metairie on Saturday.

First, the St. Ann Men’s Club will sponsor its annual Crawfish Rumble from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the church and school grounds, 4921 Meadowdale St.

Armbands are available for purchase, starting at $25 for adults and $15 for children 10 to 17. Children 9 and younger will be admitted free. All armbands will be distributed the day of the event and entitle you to entrance to the boiling grounds, all you care to eat crawfish and access to the dining and the children’s entertainment area.

Also, St. Edward the Confessor will hold its crawfish cook-off beginning at 6 p.m. on the church and school grounds, 4721 West Metairie Ave.

The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children six and older. Children 6 and under are admitted free.

And finally, St. Catherine of Siena will hold its crawfish cook-off from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the church grounds, 105 Bonnabel Blvd., Old Metairie.

The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children 6 to 12. In addition to crawfish, there will be hot dogs, jambalaya and refreshments.

Pet adoption day

The Louisiana SPCA will hold a pet adoption day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Clearview Mall, 4436 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie.

Adoption counselors and volunteers will be on hand to help you select the right pet for your family.

The event will also include a bake sale.

Bowling for a cause

Special Olympics Louisiana, the NFL Players Association and the Kenner and Harahan police departments invite businesses and the community to register teams of four bowlers for the 11th Annual Special Olympics Louisiana Bowl fundraiser.

This event joins community participants with local celebrities and Special Olympics of Louisiana athletes, all bowling together while enjoying a day of fun, food, and music.

The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Bowling Lanes in Harahan. It’s open to the public.
