DONALDSONVILLE — The City Council voted 4-0 to approve a land swap deal with Ascension Parish government giving both entities locations for new public service facilities.
Through the intergovernmental agreement approved during Tuesday’s council meeting, the city will receive about 3 acres along La. 3089 near the South Louisiana State Fairgrounds, owned by parish government. The city plans to construct a new fire station on the site.
In return, parish government will receive from the city a 5-acre tract of land along Thibaut Drive, where it plans to locate a new public works facility that will serve the parish’s west bank.
Councilman Charles Brown Sr. abstained from the vote.
Funding for the new fire station will come from a 5-mill, 10-year property tax dedicated to major capital expenses. The tax, which generates about $100,000 each year and was first approved in 2002, was renewed by voters last April.
The agreement next goes to the Ascension Parish Council for ratification.

ANTI-VIOLENCE EVENT: The council gave its backing to an upcoming anti-violence march through the city.
Street Legal Riders, a Gonzales-based motorcycle club, will host the event, scheduled for 3 p.m. April 28.
Murray Walker, community liaison for the club, said the march will begin at the Donaldsonville Municipal Building, 609 Railroad Ave., and make its way down St. Patrick Street to the Williams & Southall Funeral Home, 101 La. 945 Loop. The theme for the event will be “Living in Peace, Instead of Resting in Peace.”
The procession will include members of the Street Legal Riders, a hearse and other vehicles in a mock funeral procession, Walker said.
“The goal is to make people aware of the violence in our city, and that living in peace is a better alternative than ending up in the hearse or spending life behind bars,” he said.
An event at the end of the march will feature guest speakers, food and more.
