Baton Rouge police arrested a 34-year-old man Wednesday in the 2004 drive-by shooting of another man after a witness came forward with information about the killing, a police spokesman said.
Brian Antonio Spears, 9933 Ave. B, Baton Rouge, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison with first-degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Louis Davis, Lt. Don Kelly said in a news release.
The shooting occurred Aug. 24, 2004, in the 6300 block of Airline Highway, Kelly said.
Someone in a passing vehicle shot at the car in which Davis was riding, Kelly said.
The driver was not hit, but Davis was struck and later died from his wounds, Kelly said.
The car carrying Davis contained at least two other people, according to a warrant for Spears’ arrest. Only Davis was hit.
A witness recently gave officers credible information that Spears was the shooter, Kelly said.
The witness came forward within the last two weeks, Cpl. Tommy Stubbs said.
Stubbs declined to say whether the witness came forward on his or her own or if officers contacted the witness about the shooting.
Joseph Davis, Louis Davis’ brother, calmly reflected upon the arrest in his brother’s death while sitting inside his St. Katherine Avenue home Wednesday.
“I just stand on God’s words that the wicked shall not go unpunished,” Joseph Davis said. “I knew that (the shooter) was going to get his coming anyway — whoever it was.”
Joseph Davis said his brother was an outgoing person who was not violent but was hanging out with the wrong crowd.
He said his brother may have been shot during a retaliation killing intended for a different target.
“Three people were in the car, but he was the only one that got hit,” Joseph Davis said.
Stubbs, the police spokesman, confirmed that officers believe Davis was shot during a retaliation for another shooting but was not the intended target.
“He was warned as well, by me and others,” Joseph Davis said. “He just chose not to take heed to what was going on and his surroundings.”
Family members of Spears could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
