LeBeau’s Cajun Café & Catering in Gonzales features a family-friendly atmosphere, and their great service really makes you feel welcome and at home.
Many of the diners seemed to know one another, and we enjoyed watching them stop by each other’s tables to say hello and chat and even take a turn around the small dance floor. A trio played Cajun music from a stage resembling a tiny front porch tucked in the corner.
Greeting us with a big smile, the server explained we could choose items already prepared from the hot line, which includes daily specials and sides, or order salads and hot-cooked sandwiches from the menu to be delivered to the table.
We chose from both the line and the menu and our favorite dish was the fried catfish topped with shrimp etouffee ($11.99), one of the daily specials. Taking a bite of the well-seasoned etouffee and crunching into the perfectly fried fish at the same time was wonderful. The dish, like all of their specials, came with two sides and a roll and we would definitely get this one again.
We also loved the pulled pork sandwich ($7.49), which was piled high with the tender smoky pork on a large bun with a side of onion rings. The sandwich was absolutely delicious.
A sign said the crawfish bisque ($14.99) was their specialty and served daily so we had to give it a try. The rich brown bisque was served over rice with a generous amount of stuffed shells, but it was hard to eat with the plastic cutlery and the stuffing was a little too sweet for our tastes.
We also tried a fried shrimp plate ($10.99). The butterflied shrimp had more batter than we prefer but were still good and crunchy. The serving was generous and came with two sides and some delicious dense hushpuppies.
The server who took our order said we needed to come back soon because they were switching to “real dishes” instead of the plastic plates they were using that night. We hope that indicates they plan to be around for a long time, because the restaurant has the feel of a landmark in the making.
