La. DOTD set to open last new ramp for Huey P. Long bridge

The state Department of Transportation and Development will partially open the final new overpass ramp on the east bank of the Huey P. Long Bridge on Saturday.

The ramp is part of a $1.2 billion widening project of the bridge that connects the east and west banks of Jefferson Parish.

Drivers headed for the west bank will use the new ramp to cross over Jefferson Highway to directly enter the bridge.

One lane of the ramp will open at first, the DOTD said. The other lane will be closed to allow crews to complete work on drainage and guardrail installation.

Once completed, the bridge widening project will include three 11-foot lanes in each direction, with 8-foot and 2-foot inside shoulders.

The total widths of the new surfaces will be more than double the existing driving lanes.

The bridge widening is set for completion June 16.
