The Saints announced Monday that they have agreed to terms with a pair of unrestricted free agents — former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Kenyon Coleman and former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Luke McCown.
Coleman spent the last two seasons as a starting defensive end in the Cowboys’ 3-4 alignment under new Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, while McCown, who played his college ball at Louisiana Tech, was Matt Ryan’s backup with the Falcons in 2012 after spending the spring and summer with the Saints.
Coleman becomes the second former Cowboys’ player to join the Saints in the past five days as linebacker Victor Butler agreed to a three-year deal on Thursday. Like Coleman, Butler played the last two seasons under Ryan with the Cowboys.
An 11-year NFL veteran, the 6-foot-5, 293-pound Coleman has played in 141 games with 81 starts with the Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and two stints with the Cowboys. While with the Browns, he played under Ryan and then joined him in Dallas.
Coleman, a fifth-round draft pick of the Raiders in 2002, has career totals of 400 tackles, 131/2 sacks, 14 tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and seven passes defensed.
McCown, who is entering his 10th NFL season, becomes the primary backup to Drew Brees after three-year backup Chase Daniel signed a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on the first day of the free-agency signing period on March 12.
A 6-4, 217-pounder who entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick of the Browns in 2004, McCown has appeared in 22 career games with nine starts while playing for the Browns, Tampa Bay Bucs, Jacksonville Jaguars and Falcons.
He has completed 184 of 316 career pass attempts for 2,035 yards with nine touchdowns and 14 interceptions for a passer rating of 68.5.
McCown was signed by the Saints last June, but didn’t get much of a chance in training camp behind Brees, Daniel and third-stringer Sean Canfield. McCown was released in mid-August, while Canfield was waived on the final cut.
