An argument during a Good Friday family gathering in Prairieville’s Jamestown subdivision ended with one family member fatally shooting another, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office reported.

Robert Earl Cosey Jr., 45, and his wife began arguing during the gathering at their residence, sheriff’s Maj. Kevin Hanna said in a news release.

At one point, Cosey left, grabbed a gun and returned to continue arguing, Hanna said.

Cosey then stormed out of the house followed by Sheddrick Diggs Jr., 39, of Baker, cousin of Cosey’s wife. Diggs proceeded to plead with Cosey to give him the gun before things got out of hand, Hanna said.

Instead, Cosey turned around in the driveway and allegedly shot Diggs, Hanna said.

Deputies arrived at the house shortly before 4 p.m. to find Diggs unresponsive and Cosey gone, Hanna said.

After deputies tracked down Cosey driving a vehicle on La. 42, they chased him into Airline Highway, Hanna said. Cosey pulled over and surrendered to deputies on Airline, just inside East Baton Rouge Parish, Hanna said.

Cosey, 17128 Richmond Drive, Prairieville, was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on one count of second-degree murder, Hanna said.

He was held without bond Friday night, Hanna said.
