Letter: Black Bayou Road needs improvement

Re: the hit-and-run which killed a bicyclist on Black Bayou Road.

To avoid another tragedy, let’s take this opportunity immediately to improve safety on that state highway. Reduce the speed limit from 55 mph to 40 mph or so from Airline Highway through La. 44, where the accident occurred, all the way to Roddy Road. This area, in particular the intersection with O’Neal Road, is a constant speedway for motorists.

Many of my relatives, including my elderly mother, live on this road, and entering it is dangerous because the pickup trucks sometimes go 70 mph or 80 mph. The State Police should examine, with Ascension Parish authorities, why such a high speed limit is allowed on a road with so many driveways, no shoulder and mailboxes set right up to the road. (This ain’t your grandpa’s cow pasture any more. It is now a residential area.)
