NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Hornets shooting guard Eric Gordon will play Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers, his former team, coach Monty Williams said after the team’s morning shootaround.
Gordon sat out Monday’s victory against the Denver Nuggets with a left ankle injury. Point guard Greivis Vasquez sat out that game after re-injuring his left ankle, but he also might play against the Clippers, giving the team its starting backcourt back.
“Greivis went through shootaround this morning, so we’ll see how he feels before the game,” Williams said. “But Eric looked good today. He’s got some soreness, but it looks like he’s going to play. But we’ll just wait until game time for Greivis.”
Vasquez led the Hornets to a 105-98 victory over the Clippers the first time the teams met this season, on Nov. 26 in Los Angeles. He had 10 assists and scored 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-8 on 3-point attempts, in his matchup against Chris Paul, considered the best point guard in basketball. Paul had 20 points and eight assists.
In the teams’ next meeting, on Dec. 19 in Los Angeles, Vasquez was held to five points on 1-of-7 shooting, although he had 10 assists. Paul had 10 points and 12 assists with no turnovers.
Gordon has not played since Friday’s win against Memphis. He came to the Hornets before the start of the 2011-12 season in a trade that sent Paul to the Clippers. The Hornets retained him this season by matching a four-year $58 million contract offer from the Phoenix Suns.
With Vasquez and Gordon sitting out against Denver, backups Brian Roberts and Darius Miller played well. Roberts had 13 points and a Hornets season-high 18 assists, and Miller scored 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-5 on 3-point attempts, as New Orleans won 110-86.
Vasquez tried to convince Williams he could play Monday night.
“He came in when the ankle taped and with a brace,” Williams said. “I just said ‘no.’ Greivis is a Warrior, but sometimes you’ve got to be these guys’ brains.”
