The spring plant sale of the East Baton Rouge Parish Master Gardeners will be held Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Burden Center off Essen Lane, near I-10.
Area Master Gardeners have grown the plants for the sale, and shoppers will be able to stroll around the grounds and take in the sights of more than 5,000 plants and 100 varieties.
Rosebushes, coleus, verbenas, torenias, day lilies and irises will be on sale, say the Master Gardeners, as well as cacti and succulents, angel trumpets, pentanas, hibiscus and more, including figs, blueberries and hanging baskets.
Photos of the plants can be seen at http://www.mgplantsale.com, a website that lets you print out a shopping list of plants based on criteria like flower color and whether a plant does best in sun or shade.
The website notes that the availability of any particular plant may change until the day of the sale and invites viewers to check back for updates.
Visitors are also invited to bring along a wagon to make their shopping easier.
Mother’s Day this year is on May 12, so it could be that a plant for a gift could be chosen this weekend, hidden away somewhere environmentally suitable and nurtured along until its unveiling next month.
On Saturday, children will be able to pot a plant for Mother’s Day.
Also on Saturday, there will be a story time for children in the Burden rose garden, beginning at 9 a.m., with the last reading at 10:30 a.m.
Master Gardeners, volunteers of the LSU AgCenter, will be on hand at the plant sale with tips and advice. Having problems with a plant at home? Bring a sample of it to the plant health clinic, also going on during the weekend, for solutions.
POST SCRIPT: Burden Center will be the setting of another opportunity for a lovely outing on Saturday evening.
Its “Spring Sing,” set in its shady Windrush Gardens, will feature a number of musical performances from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Bring lawn chairs and/or blankets and enjoy the music. No ice chests, please. Local food trucks will be available, and rain sites at Burden are ready if the weather changes.
The venue opens at 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children 4 to 12 and can be purchased there. For more information, call (225) 763-3990 or visit http://www.LSUAgCenter.com/Burden.
