Wednesday is a big day for 27 former LSU football players hoping to take the next step to an NFL career when the school hosts Pro Day at the indoor practice facility.
With the draft only four weeks away, the 13 former Tigers who took part in the NFL Combine last month — a group that included 11 underclassmen — will work out for front office personnel, coaches and scouts.
A total of 20 players from the 2012 team will participate along with six members of the 2011 squad and one from 2009, LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette said.
The workouts will begin at noon with a series of tests in the weight room as players will be measured in the vertical leap and broad jump and then move to the 225-pound bench press.
ESPN3 will provide online coverage at 1:15 p.m., which will include the players who choose to be timed in the 40-yard dash and other running drills. Individual position drills will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Among the players drawing the most attention will be defensive ends Barkevious Mingo and Sam Montgomery, inside linebacker Kevin Minter and free safety Eric Reid.
Mingo is projected to be a top-15 pick in most mock drafts, while Montgomery, Minter and Reid have also been mentioned as possible first-round choices in the April 25-27 draft.
All four of the players were juniors on last year’s team along with tackle Chris Faulk, defensive tackle Bennie Logan, cornerback Tharold Simon, and running backs Spencer Ware and Michael Ford.
Sophomore punter Brad Wing also put his name in for the draft after spending three seasons with the LSU program.
Seniors expected to work are center P.J. Lonergan and defensive end Lavar Edwards, who were invited to the combine, wide receiver Russell Shepard; tackle Josh Dworaczyk, defensive tackle Josh Downs; tight end Chase Clement; defensive end Chancey Aghayere; and kicker Drew Alleman.
Also expected Wednesday is cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, who was dismissed from the team in August.
“This is always a great day for our program,” LSU coach Les Miles said. “It brings tremendous exposure to our program and serves as a great opportunity for our former players to showcase their talent and abilities in a familiar setting to NFL scouts and coaches.”
