GONZALES — St. Amant High School students used rotten fruit, keys, a hot dog, plants, flowers, cow teeth, fish gills, broken skateboards and a variety of things in photographs for the sixth annual Advanced Placement studio art class “Art in Unlikely Places” assignment.
Art teacher Darryl Babin said 39 photographs were entered in the annual art show, which held a reception Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
It was the biggest show Babin has hosted.
The students were asked to photograph something in an unusual setting, he said.
The photograph could be manipulated using computer software, Babin said.
First-place winner Cole Benoit, one of four St. Amant baseball players exhibiting their works in the show, was inspired by a house plant, he said.
Benoit said the assignment “really intrigued” him.
He ended up taking 50 to 60 photographs to get the one that he turned in for the assignment.
He used software to change the contrast, but not the colors of his photograph.
The 17-year-old senior said he wants to play baseball in college but plans to study art as a minor.
He praised Babin for his teaching style, saying he’s learned “a lot in just two years with Mr. Babin.”
Tendrick Cooper won second place and Chelsea Hulin took third place.
Babin credited the school for its support of the arts. He said he is fortunate to have the resources he needs to teach art classes.
He recently was able to purchase macro lenses for cellphones, which some of the students used for their photographs, he said.
St. Elizabeth Hospital team members Sue Knight and Angela Lambert said the partnership with the school art department has been good for the hospital.
Lambert said the photographs lift the spirits of the team members and patients at the hospital.
The framed photographs are on sale, with the money going to the students. Last year’s show brought in $2,000, Babin said.
The students’ works will be on exhibit in the first-floor halls of the hospital for one year.
