Of special historical note this busy weekend is the annual Civil War battle re-enactment at Port Hudson State Historic Site on U.S. 61 in East Feliciana Parish. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the longest true siege in U.S. military history.
The main re-enactment battles, which recall the May 22, 1863, attack in aptly named Slaughter’s Field, are set for 2 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, but activities are planned from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
Admission is $4, except for children 12 and younger and visitors 62 and older. The Zachary High School band will sell lunches.
The Jackson Assembly’s 48th annual Antiques Show and Sale begins Friday and runs through Sunday in the historic downtown area of Jackson, with dealers from seven states offering a variety of antiques.
The Professor’s Cottage will be open to visitors from noon to 4 p.m. daily at Centenary State Historic Site, regional artists will have a show and sale, and the Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders will host their annual free Spring Open House at their facility from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The railroad’s model train layouts are behind the Republic of West Florida Museum on College Street.
The Zachary Chamber of Commerce’s annual Zfest has been renamed the Zachary Arts and Music Festival and will run Thursday through Sunday at the BREC Community Park off La. 964, south of the La. 64 intersection.
Carnival rides begin at 5 p.m. Thursday and the music lineup includes the Todd O’Neill Band at 5:30 p.m. Friday, followed by Chee Weez at 9 p.m.; Boot Hill at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by Randy Houser at 9 p.m.; and Not4Sale at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Art shows and sales will be held throughout the festival, along with numerous activities for visitors of all ages.
Author Rod Dreher, of St. Francisville, will read excerpts from his book, “The Little Way of Ruthie Leming,” from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the West Feliciana High School auditorium as a fundraiser for the West Feliciana Parish Library. Tickets, $10 per person, are available at the library or at the door.
The book, which goes on sale nationally April 9, tells of the life and death of Dreher’s sister and the outpouring of support for the West Feliciana teacher when she was diagnosed with cancer.
Also on the program are Leming’s friend, Abby Temple Cochran, and physician, Dr. Tim Lindsey.
The Clinton branch of the Audubon Regional Library will have an Easter egg hunt from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday for children younger than 12. Bring an Easter basket, hunt eggs and hear stories.
The Baker Civic Club’s egg hunt will be at 1 p.m. Sunday on the club’s property at 2640 N. Magnolia Drive in Baker. The event is free to children 12 and younger.
The Bank of St. Francisville will host a blood drive from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the bank’s parking lot to benefit Richard “Dickie” Prescott.
