GONZALES — A Prairieville man was killed Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run incident when a passing vehicle struck the bicycle he was riding on Black Bayou Road.
Frank J. Bercegeay, 49, of Prairieville, was pedaling on the road east of La. 44 when struck by the unidentified vehicle, Louisiana State Police announced in a news release. Bercegeay was thrown into a roadside ditch where he died.
A pedestrian walking along Black Bayou Road, also called La. 934, later in the morning noticed Bercegeay in the ditch and notified authorities.
State Police began investigating the incident around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, State Police spokesman Jared Sandifer said.
It’s unknown if Bercegeay was impaired, but toxicology results are pending an autopsy. He was wearing a reflective vest, Sandifer said.
Investigators haven’t been able to determine what type of vehicle struck Bercegeay, Sandifer said, but they believe the vehicle will possibly have damage to the right side or passenger mirror.
Troopers ask anyone with information about the case to contact Louisiana State Police Troop A at (225) 754-8500, or their local law enforcement agency.
