Hazardous materials will be collected April 6

Ascension residents can get rid of select unwanted hazardous items April 6 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center.

Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez said the parish’s Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the expo center, 9039 St. Landry Road in Gonzales.

The event is for Ascension Parish residents only and anyone dropping off items must present a valid identification card.

Ascension Parish Environmental Manager Don Hysell said more than 1,000 cars showed up with materials at last May’s collection day event. Collection numbers from last year’s event show parish residents brought in nearly 50,000 pounds or 25 tons of hazardous materials, Hysell said.

“We’re really excited to get this event rolling in April,” Hysell said. “I look forward to assisting the residents of Ascension Parish with their recycling needs.”

Materials to be accepted include a limit of five automobile tires, car and golf cart batteries, cellphones and batteries, electronic equipment, fluorescent bulbs, gasoline, oil, antifreeze, home and garden chemicals, household batteries, ink and toner cartridges, latex and oil-based paints, thinners, varnishes, scrap metal in small quantities, rechargeable batteries, televisions, small propane tanks and appliances for scrap metal.

Residents can also drop off telephone systems, video cameras and DVRs, computer accessories, Xboxes, PlayStations and Wii game centers, fax machines, monitors and printers.

Materials not accepted include explosives, radioactive materials, medical waste, asbestos, high school lab waste, commercial and governmental facility waste, paper, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic and glass, hurricane debris or woody waste.

Hysell said the event is sponsored by Ascension Parish Government, Keep America Beautiful, Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Keep Ascension Beautiful, Louisiana DEQ, Shell Chemical, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Ascension Moving and Storage, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Gonzales Fire Department, Ascension Parish School Board, LeBlanc’s Payless Food Store, Acadian Waste, Acadian Ambulance, Eatel Corp., OMI Environmental Solutions and BASF.
